HERNANDO COUNTY – An inmate has died at the Hernando County jail, the Sheriff’s Office reported on April 30.
On April 29 at about 4:48 a.m., a detention deputy was conducting a routine inmate count when he noticed a male inmate unresponsive within his cell. The inmate was the only individual assigned to his cell.
The detention deputy immediately contacted the medical unit within the detention center and requested medical personnel respond to the inmate’s cell. Deputies, along with nursing staff, then entered the cell and began performing lifesaving measures.
Hernando County Fire Rescue arrived on scene a short time later and assumed medical care of the inmate, continuing life-saving efforts at the scene and throughout transport to a local hospital. The inmate was transported to the hospital and was later pronounced dead by medical staff at 5:23 a.m. The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
The subject’s body was transported to the District 5 Medical Examiner’s Office in Leesburg, where an autopsy will be performed.
The inmate has been incarcerated at the detention center since March 4 on various drug charges.
