Opening: new movie releases

A number of new movies and limited television series will debut this week, including the following titles opening in theaters or premiering via video on demand on various streaming platforms:

‘Minions & Monsters’

Genre: Animated comedy

Cast: Allison Janney, Christoph Waltz, Jeff Bridges, Jesse Eisenberg, Zoey Deutch, Bobby Moynihan, Phil LaMarr, Trey Parker and Pierre Coffin

Director: Pierre Coffin

Rated: PG

This is the rambunctious, ridiculous and totally true story of how the Minions conquered Hollywood, became movie stars, lost everything, unleashed monsters onto the world and then banded together to try and save the planet from the mayhem they had just created.

The film will be theatrically released by Universal Pictures on July 1.

‘Enola Holmes 3’

Genre: Mystery

Cast: Millie Bobby Brown, Louis Partridge, Himesh Patel, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Henry Cavill, and Helena Bonham Carter

Director: Philip Barantini

Rated: PG-13

Adventure chases detective Enola Holmes (Millie Bobby Brown) to Malta, where personal and professional dreams collide on a case more tangled and treacherous than any she has faced before.

The film is scheduled to be released on Netflix on July 1.

‘Young Washington’

Genre: Epic historical war drama

Cast: William Franklyn-Miller, Mary-Louise Parker, Kelsey Grammer, Andy Serkis, and Ben Kingsley

Director: Jon Erwin

Rated: PG-13

Before he was the father of a nation, he was a soldier fighting to survive. A single misstep thrusts young George Washington (William Franklyn-Miller) into the center of a global conflict, testing his honor, loyalty, and courage. As alliances crumble and the frontier erupts into war, he must confront not only his enemies but the man he’s becoming.

The film will be released by Angel Studios on July 3.

‘Lockbox’

Genre: Supernatural horror

Cast: Carla Gugino, Lou Taylor Pucci, and Katharine Isabelle

Director: Daniel Stamm

Rated: R

Seeking peace, Ellen (Carla Gugino) moves to a rural town with her traumatized cousin, Winthrop (Lou Taylor Pucci). After an erratic neighbor claims Winthrop is dangerous, supernatural occurrences increase, with Winthrop revealing he feels as though he is “thinking someone else’s thoughts”. Ellen must then protect him from a relentless, supernatural entity.

The film is scheduled to be released through Dark Castle and Aura Entertainment on July 3.

‘Swallowtail & Dragonfly’

Genre: Drama

Cast: Vanessa Yao, Vivian Dawson, Russell Wong, Richard Ouyang, Naomi Matsuda, and Candace Kita

Director: Julia Jay Pierrepont III

Based on the true story of one courageous woman’s journey from stardom as a gifted artist in glamorous 1930s Shanghai, through war and revolution and back again, sustained by her gift for beautiful paintings and an epic love story that would not die.

The film is scheduled for a limited theatrical release on July 3 through Indican Pictures.
