Local students honored as UMGC council volunteers
Two University of Maryland Global Campus students from Palm Harbor have been honored for their work as volunteers with the institution’s Student Insight Council.
Laura Berry and Ernest Norquist were among more than 1,000 students recognized for their work on the council. These volunteers play a vital role in shaping the UMGC experience by providing feedback that helps create a stronger future for the university community, according to UMGC.
Dunedin woman to join bike-a-thon for cancer research
Eva Herzing of Dunedin will participate in a two-day bicycle marathon across Massachusetts in August as part of a challenge to raise money for cancer research.
Herzing will be among more than 6,000 cyclists in the Aug. 1-2 Pan-Mass Challenge that will benefit the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
During each annual PMC weekend, thousands of cyclists and volunteers come together from across the world, hailing from 47 U.S. states and 12 countries, with a shared purpose of raising as much money as possible for Dana-Farber. Cyclists ride routes ranging from 25 to 177 miles.
This year’s challenge hopes to raise $79 million.
Tarpon Springs issues public art calls to artists
The city of Tarpon Springs has issued three open calls for artists to paint murals on public buildings and other facilities at various locations around town.
The projects involve:
• Storm drain murals
• Historic bleacher building mural
• Economic Development Building mural.
The deadline for submission for all projects is Monday, Oct. 5. Artists will be notified by Oct. 21. All work must be completed by Feb. 1, 2027, weather permitting.
An honorarium of $200 will be given as compensation for the selected artwork at each location. Painting kits will be provided for each location, consisting of paints in primary colors, brushes/rollers and protective gear.
The storm drain mural project is open to artists of all skill levels and all ages, including clubs, groups and students. There is no fee to enter; artists do not have to be a resident of Tarpon Springs to enter.
